THE UPDATE: Lauren Conrad of The Hills deepened her signature Cali-girl blonde for a natural brown with golden highlights.
Why it works: Brown is the new blonde, darling! "It's definitely a trend," Robinson says. "Darker hair is glossier and, in Lauren's case, more flattering with her skin tone. It's sexy, healthy, and sophisticated."
Now it's your turn: "Add a few face-framing highlights a half-shade lighter than your allover color," Robinson suggests. "This makes a brunette look less monochromatic and more sun-kissed." Or go totally D.I.Y.: "If your hair is naturally light brown or dark blonde, choose an at-home shade with suede or neutral brown in the name," Robinson says. Once you've done the base color, use a highlighting kit to lighten a few pieces around your face (about three on each side of your part), applying the lightener from roots to ends. Then highlight a few random strands in the back and on the sides, working "from the middle of the shaft down to create a beachy effect."
