A winning gown?

In February, Kate Winslet won the Academy Award for best actress for her role as a Nazi concentration-camp guard in "The Reader." Opinions were split on her gown, a bluish-gray one-shouldered dress with a black satin back. Some critics loved its elegance, others felt it aged Winslet.

Newly inaugurated President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama danced to Etta James' "At Last" at every one of their 10 inaugural balls in January. Michelle Obama's white chiffon gown was designed by Jason Wu, 26. The designer didn't know the new first lady would be wearing his creation until he watched the festivities on television.
