Gilded by a setting sun, caribou lead their newborn calves across the Puvirnituq River in late July. For centuries caribou have been vital to the local Inuit as a source of food and clothing. Caribou meat is central to their diet, while the exceptional insulating quality of caribou fur makes it a valued commodity in Nunavik's harsh northern winters.

Fresh from a dip in the sea, a polar bear (above) treads terra firma at Abloviak Fiord. Abloviak offers one of the most reliable spots in Nunavik for sightings of this threatened species; another is Akpatok Island, northwest of Abloviak Fiord in Ungava Bay, where writer Costas Christ observed six polar bears in one afternoon.
