Costly kitty

A 4-year-old hairless cream point Sphynx named Moshe Moshi, belonging to Carol Meir of Takoma Park, Md., sits at The Big Bad Woof pet supplies store in Washington, D.C., on March 15. Moshe Moshi has allergies that are treated with a venison and pork diet and daily medication. Meir figures it costs her about $750 a year for veterinary care and tests. Medicine is $250 a year.

Meal fit for a king

A lion eats prime steak at Southwick's Zoo in Mendon, Mass., on March 15. After a transformer fire knocked out power to homes and businesses in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood, prime cuts of meat were donated to the zoo by a restaurant affected by the power outage. The Capital Grille steakhouse in Boston donated 2,500 pounds of meat worth $20,000 to the zoo.

Welcome to the (butterfly) jungle

A paper kite butterfly lands on a newly arrived pentas flower on March 18 at the San Diego Zoo. A flutter of preparations is occurring this week before the Butterfly Jungle opens on March 24 at the zoo's Safari Park. This year, 30 species of butterflies will inhabit the "Hidden Jungle" exhibit. Many of them are still in their pupae stage, readying to emerge in the park's hatching room.
