Auster Rookery

This photo was taken at Auster Rookery while I was working for the Australian Antarctic Division at Mawson Station during the summer of 2006. He/she is a juvenile emperor penguin and appeared to be looking after the younger chicks, almost like a babysitter. Such a beautiful place when the weather is fine.

South Pole Tent

A Scott tent set up at the Geographic South Pole, Antarctica. Set up outside the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. A 30-second exposure of an aurora over the tent used for camping during the winter of 2009. Campers overnight here in order to get out of the station and sleep at -80ºF.

Fur Seal

I was fortunate enough to be able to go on a cruise with my father a few years ago, visiting Antarctica by way of South Georgia Island. The wildlife there is amazing, and this shot always brings a smile to my face. There were numerous king penguins and fur seals. This fur seal was rolling around in the feathers that collected at the tide line and came up looking, well, kind of like a chocolate sundae covered in coconut!

Cecilie Skog

Norwegian adventurer Cecilie Skog navigates wind-eroded snow known as sastrugi on Antarctica. Skog and American Ryan Waters completed the first ever unsupported and unassisted ski traverse of Antarctica on January 21, 2010. The team skied for 70 days over 1,170 miles from Berkner Island via the South Pole to the Ross Sea.

King Penguin Fledgling

An almost grown king penguin on the island of South Georgia in Antarctica. Standing among hundreds of thousands of vocal youngsters was a moving experience, especially witnessing the harsh conditions that they live in. Until all their fluffy down is replaced by their swimming plumage, they are unable to go into the water to feed for themselves and often have to wait long periods of time before they are found by their parents and fed. This particular individual reminded me of a bad hair day.
