Auster Rookery

This photo was taken at Auster Rookery while I was working for the Australian Antarctic Division at Mawson Station during the summer of 2006. He/she is a juvenile emperor penguin and appeared to be looking after the younger chicks, almost like a babysitter. Such a beautiful place when the weather is fine.

I used to work on a square-rigged tall ship sailing between Ushuaia and the Antarctic Peninsula. Climbing aloft to set or furl the sails yielded some incredible scenery.

Pleneau Bay

Even with my dry suit, this split shot took so much time that I was frozen. Using a housing on my Nikon D200 with 12mm lens and fish-eye port, I was able to capture the mass of ice that represents the greater part of an iceberg under the water. The conditions off Pleneau Island, close to the Antarctic Circle on the peninsula, were near perfect with a clear blue day, bright sunshine, and crystal clear water. A day to remember and a moment never to be forgotten.

Devil Island Penguins

This picture was taken from a Zodiac just offshore of Devil Island in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica. We have no clue how this group of Adélie penguins got up here, as it is a minimum of ten feet down in all directions of the iceberg.

Half Moon Island

I took this picture at Half Moon Island on the Antarctic Peninsula. Initially, I was interested in photographing the iceberg but when I got closer it became apparent that the chinstrap penguin had decided to reside there for a while. I shot the picture wide, allowing for the penguin to be appreciated in its natural habitat. The grand scale of the iceberg, dwarfing the little creature, is a reflection of life in Antarctica, an environment of true magnitude and extremes.

King Penguin Fledgling

An almost grown king penguin on the island of South Georgia in Antarctica. Standing among hundreds of thousands of vocal youngsters was a moving experience, especially witnessing the harsh conditions that they live in. Until all their fluffy down is replaced by their swimming plumage, they are unable to go into the water to feed for themselves and often have to wait long periods of time before they are found by their parents and fed. This particular individual reminded me of a bad hair day.
