On a bus ride between Nairobi and Mombasa, these women approached my window offering a local delicacy—mango and chili powder. I asked to take this photo before buying the snack. The photo was taken in Voi, a town in the Taita-Taveta district of Kenya. It is a market town and an entrance point to some of Kenya's most stunning national parks, which border Tanzania and Mount Kilimanjaro.

This photo was taking at sunrise at the summit of Mount Kenya in December of 2006. It was a technically difficult shot, as I was forced to keep my balance on the side of the mountain while snapping the picture with one hand. This was taken with a Nikon D200 with an AF-S NIKKOR 18-200mm DX VR.

Young Kenyan girls watch the open rehearsals for the "celebrations" at Mosocho, Kenya, one day before the official event. During "celebrations" new (female), marriagable members are introduced into the Kisii community. While this traditionally means that these girls have to be circumcised, organizations in Mosocho are now trying to overcome this ritual through education and by providing certificates that display the girls' names and declare them full members of the community.

We accidentally woke up this leopard while he was napping in a tree. He had obviously just eaten a large meal (note his belly), and he was quick to show his displeasure as he left his napping spot for a quieter venue. Interactions between wildlife in the Masai Mara National Park in Kenya (where this shot was taken) and humans had been unusually low as of last July because of recent violence in the country, and so most animals were more curious than skittish.
