I took this picture in Dadaab, Kenya. It's a rural place next to Hagadera, Ifo and Dagaley refugee camps. This boy was taking the camels to the watering hole.

Also known as golden orb weavers or golden silk orb weavers, these spiders produce webs that can measure more than three feet in diameter, with support strands extending many more feet away. The name of this family of spiders refers to the colour of the silk, which is said to be attractive to insects, and is only produced by the much larger female. To avoid damage from birds, it is claimed that insect husks are left on the web to act as visual cues (like safety strips/signs on glass doors/windows!) but several reports of these spiders eating small birds in some parts of the world contradict this notion.

A Congolese woman prepares dinner for her family in Nairobi, Kenya. As an urban refugee, life is filled with the never-ending struggle to provide for her family. When there is no food, family members go to restaurants and ask for discarded chicken feet. She works to remove the ropes before boiling them in water. Filmmaker John Gyovai captured the image after interviewing her for a documentary film project about urban refugees with the International Rescue Committee and MediaServe Intl.

It appeared suddenly ... It was unexpected for all. Attentively having examined us, the cub dissolved into the dried up grass of the savanna in the Masai Mara.
