This exhibition brings together more than forty works by artists Chen Tuanjie,Qin Ling,Xu Peiwu,Yang Xiaobing,Zhang Hui,Zi Bai,and Zhou Wei,presenting a variety of subjective responses to social development in China. In the context of rapid industrialization and on-going urbanization, these artists have studied and documented urban and rural development in China, the precarious existence of migrant workers, the totemic beliefs of ethnic minorities, and the current status of religion and folk customs。
In his poem Going Down Zhongnan Mountain, the poet Li Bai speaks of“looking back at the path I came by”,and seeing only a faint line of green, nearly obscured by the twilight shadows。We could say that these works are the artists’way of“looking back at the path [we] came by”,the path in this sense being the route China has taken towards industrialization and urbanization. The artists use their work as a medium to discuss their personal connections with the process of social development。Report on Representation can be interpreted as a representative report,a statement or re-expression.On the one hand, these works explore the development of urban and rural areas, such as the coastal areas of Guangzhou and the ancient city of Xi‘an,and present images of religious and folk culture, for example the distinctive tattoos seen in certain ethnic minority areas of Yunnan province, and the lives of the Li Su people in the Three Parallel Rivers region. On the other hand, these images also re-introduce and re-interpret existing social phenomena and living conditions。
The exhibition will open at 4 pm on April 6th,2018。An academic seminar will be held at 2 pm on the same day。It will promote further communication and cooperation between Chinese and German artists。
