The Ocean Watch crew saw less sea ice through the Northwest Passage than expected. Moreover, older, thicker ice had melted and was replaced by thinner, first-year ice.

The major threat to small boats traversing the Northwest Passage is pack ice, or frozen sea ice. Ocean Watch crew looked for openings, mostly near shore, but would at times have to push through larger ice floes.

Arctic inhabitants viewed by the Ocean Watch included these two polar bears. The species has recently been classified as "vulnerable" because of the melting and receding ice throughout the high Arctic. Polar bears need the ice in order to hunt seals, their main food supply, and are being forced to swim longer distances to hunt.

The Around the Americas expedition supported several research efforts, including dropping buoys in the Arctic for one monitoring program.

One of the more beautiful and interesting observations along the route was sailing through the tropics and witnessing the exchange of heat and moisture from water to atmosphere and vice versa. This exchange is vital to maintaining consistent world weather patterns.

In some 50 stops around the American continents, the Ocean Watch crew opened the boat to the public and thousands of school children for tours and hands-on marine science activities led by educators from Seattle's Pacific Science Center.
