Nature's fireworks

Lightning is seen amid a cloud of ash billowing from the Puyehue volcano near Osorno in southern Chile, 540 miles south of Santiago on June 5. The volcano erupted for the first time in half a century on June 4. The National Service of Geology and Mining warned of strong seismic activity which later resulted in an explosion that started the eruption which also produced a column of gas six miles high.

Road less traveled

People watch as an aircraft takes off from Hong Kong international airport on June 5. Citing an increase in air traffic demand on the back of strong economic growth in Asia, the city's Airport Authority said it had to find ways to increase the capacity of the airport because current facilities were expected to be saturated by 2020.

Rebel fighters inspect a burning house in the city of Yafran, about 60 miles southwest of the Libyan capital on June 6. Libyan rebels entered the mountain town on Monday, driving out Gaddafi's forces in a sign that NATO air strikes are helping the outnumbered rebel forces.
