Miss Virginia takes the crown

Wearing dazzling gowns and having high hopes, 53 contestants strutted their stuff while competing in the Miss America 2010 pageant.

Miss Virginia Caressa Cameron won the title and was crowned by Miss America 2009, Katie Stam, at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on Jan. 30, 2010 in Las Vegas, Nev.

A family affair

Caressa Cameron, a 22-year-old from Fredericksburg, Va., won a $50,000 scholarship along with the crown. She is a broadcast journalism student at Virginia Commonwealth University, and wants to become an anchor.

Cameron said her win was a testament to her family's strength.

"You can be and become anything that you want to be, even Miss America," she said.

Making the cut

After the swimsuit competition, 15 contestants anxiously wait to find out which 12 will advance to the evening gown segment. In the end, Miss Arkansas, Miss Indiana and Miss Oregon did not make the cut.

Workin' it

Miss Virginia Caressa Cameron shows off her toned body during the swimsuit competition, wearing a bikini by Winnwear.

Fifteen contestants made it to the swimsuit portion of the event, and in an unprecented move, competitors had to choose one of their own to advance to the 15th slot. As correspondent Clinton Kelly reiterated several times, the women were not allowed to choose themselves. They ended up sending Miss Oregon, CC Barber.

Almost a winner

Kristy Cavinder, Miss California, competes in the swimsuit segment. Cavinder went on to be the first runner-up.

When discussing how she'd deal with a wardrobe malfunction, Cavinder said, "I tend to have pretty quick reflexes. I've had a lot of costume malfunctions along the way."

Crowd goes wild

She's got pipes

Miss Virginia Caressa Cameron sings a passionate rendition of "Listen" from "Dreamgirls" during the talent portion of the competition. Cameron has experience singing on stage -- she has performed at the famed Apollo Theater in New York City.

Prima ballerina

Miss California Kristy Cavinder, 21, performs ballet en pointe during the talent competition after advancing to the top ten finalists.

The ballerina won first place in the preliminary talent competition with her performance of "The Slave Maiden Variation" from "Le Corsaire."

Go outside!

"We need to get our kids back outside, playing with sticks in the street like I did when I was little," she said. "Expand your mind, go outside and get to see what this world is like."
