Being slightly hidden from the main textile and souvenir market, the indoor fruit market in Chichicastenango is missed by most tourists. The movement of all the bodies, the rush of all the bartering, and the colors of the fruit filled the room with a memorable level of energy. I felt the balcony around this hall was a special place. It was somewhere where I could watch how the world worked in a less well developed part of the planet.

A man straightens his vegetable stand in the busy market town of Chichicastenango, Guatemala. Chichicastenango, located in western Guatemala, is famous for its market days where vendors come to sell traditional Maya handicrafts, such as textiles and masks, along with food and other wares.

Dawn at a Maya landing on Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. The Highland Maya men are unloading avocados from local farms. The small boats in the foreground are used for fishing and are of a very old design. We mistakenly arrived at this landing. The quiet and mist gave it an otherworldly feeling.

I took this picture from the top of Mount Pacaya in Guatemala. After hiking all day through the fog we emerged in one of the most amazing sunsets I have ever seen.
