In August of 2008 I took a service trip to Guatemala. We traveled deep into the mountains to the remote village of Santa Avelina. While there we stayed in the grade school. During the day we had to leave so the children could go to school. I took this picture of the children hanging out of the window while I was leaving.

Churches, cathedrals, and chapels are everywhere in Guatemala. This particular church in El Progreso can be seen from the heavily transited road to the Atlantic. I've often wanted to stop and photograph but held back until this perfectly illuminated afternoon.

The cobbled streets were gleaming from the last few rays escaping the clouds. Some local women, a boy on his bike, and tourists were all on their way somewhere—but not in a rush to get there. Taken near Parque Central, in Antigua Guatemala.
