"We used late 1800s Edwardian service kitchens as a starting point because we felt like it was really about kitchen prep and work. Then we took that elegant look and made it modern at that same time," Florence says.

The island cooktop lets Tyler Florence face guests, rather than having his back to them. Another important design consideration is the kitchen triangle. "When starting a design, think about the pivot triangle: where the refrigerator, prep island and cook station, and sink are going to be," Florence says. "It needs to have a three-point pivot dynamic so that you're not running from one end to the other."

"When designing a kitchen I would recommend picking an unexpected color or a cabinet with unusual texture. Or pick one appliance that really speaks to you and tells a story and expand with that," Florence says, "Try to find something that really says you, what are you talking about, what's your own particular design philosophy."

"Black cabinets, who knew? But it's about doing something that feels serious," Florence says. "The kitchen should be the most important room in the house."

The custom piece safely holds Florence's knives, and also has plenty of surface space for chopping. It's secured to the island with industrial-strength magnets, but because it's on wheels it's easily rolled directly up to the stove or table

Vintage glassware and accessories give the space a sense of history. "It's a little old, it's a little new," Florence says. "It's completely original."

"Instead of creating separate areas, we decided to take the kitchen and make it a living space so you can hang out and celebrate, cook, tell stories, and entertain," he says.
