The Perfect Storm — Sculpture

Nathalie Miebach has perfected the art of turning weather data into beautiful sculptures and musical scores. This sculpture was inspired by a freak double storm off the coast of Massachusetts that sank the Andrea Gail, a fishing vessel, in 1990. The story was immortalized in the book "The Perfect Storm" and the movie of the same name, starring George Clooney. Here, Miebach tracks the path of both storms and the path of the sinking ship — all three tracks swirling chaotically around a central axis. Labels on the sculpture tell the story of the ship. Miebach's text draws upon recorded communications that the Andrea Gail had with other vessels, from the time it met the storm to the moment it was swallowed by the sea.

The Perfect Storm — Wallpiece

This is a simpler rendering of the Andrea Gail's fateful journey. The stronger storm is represented by the blue windmill shapes, and the smaller storm is made of striped piano scores. The green patch represents the island of Bermuda, while the Andrea Gail is the little red skiff at the top right corner.

The Loneliness of a White Knuckler — Sculpture

Made of reed, wood, wire and paper, this piece is structured to reflect weather data from a vicious 2007 winter storm. The New England storm echoed two mighty blizzards that swept through the Northeast and the Great Lakes and Ohio in 1978.

A Duet of Blizzards — Wallpiece

Two musicians can navigate this 3-D score made of wood, paper, rope and data, sounding out barometric pressure, temperature, dew point and wind. The readings reflected in this wall piece come from both the blizzard of December 2007 and the storm of February 1978.

Navigating Into a New Night — Sculpture

Miebach wrote the score for "Navigating Into a New Night" during the week following her father-in-law's death. She tracked the weather from the time she heard about his death until his funeral. She wrote her score based on the resulting data like wind and cloud cover, and marked the rhythm of passing time in black bars on the score. Then she built this sculpture, guided by the musical outline.
