Colorful crash

The Antennae are a pair of colliding galaxies about 70 million light-years away in the constellation Corvus. This color-coded image, released Oct. 3, combines views from the Hubble Space Telescope and the newly inaugurated ALMA radio telescope array in Chile.

The radio antennas of the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array, or ALMA, point skyward from Chile's Atacama Desert on Oct. 1. ALMA, which has just begun science operations, is the largest astronomical project in the world.

A picture taken from the International Space Station on Sept. 17 shows two docked Russian spacecraft with the southern lights below. The auroral display is caused by the interaction between solar particles and Earth's magnetic field.

Fall colors from space

The changing colors of fall foliage can be seen in this image of the northeastern United States, captured on Oct. 9 by an imaging spectroradiometer aboard NASA's Aqua satellite. The curl of Massachusetts' Cape Cod can be seen clearly on the right edge of the image, with New York's Long Island below and to the left.

Millipedes on Mars

Martian sand dunes ripple across this false-color image from the high-resolution camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. What's fascinating about this image, released Oct. 17, is the ridges running the length of the dunes, creating the spectacular illusion that we're looking at millipedes. This is a good example of what's called "pareidolia," where we see things that really are not there.

To celebrate 50 years of spaceflight, NASA worked wtih seven farms across the country to make corn mazes commemorating the space agency's accomplishments. This entry in the "Space Farms 7" project was created on the Rock Ranch in Georgia.
